This past Thanksgiving Holiday, seven drivers were arrested in Las Vegas for Driving Under the Influence. This was just the beginning of a Holiday-season crusade to cut back on drunk driving accidents in the Las Vegas Valley. Metro has long been devoted to curbing alcohol-related crashes, and since these crashes tend to spike around holidays such as Christmas, New Years, Halloween, and Thanksgiving, Metro will be setting up checkpoints accordingly, in order to prevent as many fatalities as possible. Checkpoints are typically set up from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. This past Thanksgiving, nearly 2,000 vehicles passed through one such checkpoint at D.I. near Valley View. A total of 28 drivers were stopped, and seven were arrested. 18 Traffic Citations were issued. The exact locations of upcoming DUI Checkpoints in Las Vegas is not announced to the public, but under all circumstances, it is in drivers’ best interest to drive sober, fully awake, and within the posted speed limits. Former Henderson Police Officer Driving Wrong Way on the 95 While off duty, 31-year old former Henderson Police Officer, Joseph Lawrance, led Highway Patrol officers on a speedy chase recently when he was seen driving the wrong way on U.S. Highway 95 near Durango. As officers chased Lawrance attempting to pull him over, Lawrance also drove the wrong way on additional surfact streets, as well as blew through a red light, according to prosecutors. Results of the blood test taken by Lawrance revealed that his blood alcohol level was 0.185 percent, which is over twice the legal limit to drive. Lawrance pleaded no contest to a DUI, though according to his attorney, Josh Tomscheck, he does play to plead guilty to the felony charge of eluding police. In the meantime, Lawrance has been ordered not to drink and must wear a device that monitors whether or not he uses alcohol. Lawrance must additionally undergo at least one year of alcohol treatment supervised by Las Vegas courts. If he completes the program, he will be allowed to withdraw his plea to the felony, having it reduced to a misdemeanor. Also to note: highway troopers found a loaded gun and hundreds of prescription pills inside Lawrance’s Toyota, along with a bottle of opened whiskey. The Las Vegas Review Journal Reports that Lawrance “believes he has a problem with alcohol, and I believe that’s the only explanation for what happened in this case,” Tomsheck said. “There’s no other way to describe this than an aberration.” Do you have a DUI charge in Las Vegas or Henderson?
