Pedestrians continue to be killed on Las Vegas roadways as careless drivers fail to slow down or stop when un-shielded men and women are crossing the street and “in their way.” In 2014 alone, The Associated Press reported that 284 people lost their lives on Nevada roads, which is higher than the previous year, but not as dramatic as the horrid high of 423 driving-related deaths in Nevada in 2006. Officials attempt to remedy this morbid problem with a heavier police presence to ticket the drivers– but many individuals also see the pedestrians as at fault, due to the fact that in many circumstances they are jaywalking or distracted (on their cell phones talking or texting, listening to music, walking while intoxicated, etc.) A jaywalking ticket can range upwards of $200 here in Las Vegas– and many officials believe that issuing tickets to both the pedestrians and the drivers may be a way to help remedy this problem faster. You may know from experience: the surest way for a Las Vegas Metro Officer to get you to slow down is to hit you with a huge fine. This is the current strategy here in the Valley, as a new bill is rapidly moving through the Nevada Legislature that would raise the fine on speeding tickets received in pedestrian zones. Currently, driving up to 10 miles per hour over the posted limit at a regular Las Vegas intersection will cost you around $148. If the new bill passes, certain intersections would be deemed “pedestrian zones” and the speeding tickets would cost $200 or as much as $450, depending on your speed. Fox 5 reported Erin Breen–coordinator of UNLV’s Traffice Safety Coalition– as having stated, “We’re having a terrible year. We’re up to 12 fatalities in Clark County already.” The new law wold also make passing other vehicles in a school zone illegal. While all this continues to run through the legislative pipelines, another bill is being sponsored that would increase fines for hit-and-run drivers. This past Thanksgiving Holiday, seven drivers were arrested in Las Vegas for Driving Under the Influence. This was just the beginning of a Holiday-season crusade to cut back on drunk driving accidents in the Las Vegas Valley. Metro has long been devoted to curbing alcohol-related crashes, and since these crashes tend to spike around holidays such as Christmas, New Years, Halloween, and Thanksgiving, Metro will be setting up checkpoints accordingly, in order to prevent as many fatalities as possible. Checkpoints are typically set up from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. This past Thanksgiving, nearly 2,000 vehicles passed through one such checkpoint at D.I. near Valley View. A total of 28 drivers were stopped, and seven were arrested. 18 Traffic Citations were issued. The exact locations of upcoming DUI Checkpoints in Las Vegas is not announced to the public, but under all circumstances, it is in drivers’ best interest to drive sober, fully awake, and within the posted speed limits. Each year, far too many individuals are killed or seriously injured as a result of DUI accidents in Southern Nevada. Most recently reported, a man suspected of driving while under the influence crashed into a motorcycle, badly injuring the rider. The rider, upon being hit, was thrown violently into the road and lay there suffering until he was taken to University Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. The driver who was the cause of the DUI collision, and who was also suspected of speeding, was 29 year old Anthony Munoz. As if it wasn’t bad enough that Munoz was speeding, driving drunk, and hit a motorcycle, Munoz also fled the scene of the accident. He eventually lost control of his Kia Sorento and drove off the road, where he and a passenger attempted to flee on foot until officers caught them. Munoz was arrested on counts of driving under the influence and hit-and-run.
